This 2 1/2-square mile refuge (about 1,675 acres) is home to many native species of animals including prairie dogs, elk, white-tailed deer, fox, and assorted waterfowl. The four-mile Big Game Auto Tour is the best for wildlife watching.
A visitor center, classrooms and an amphitheatre are featured on the site and host events throughout the year. The preserve, located 13 miles south of Devils Lake, is open to the public May 1 through September 30 until dark. The visitor center is open daily.
