Washburn is located in west central North Dakota in McLean County (of which it is the county seat) north of Bismarck along U.S. Highway 83 on the banks of the Missouri River about 20 miles south of the southeastern portion of Lake Sakakawea/ /[lakaudub]. Local attractions include the [ftmandhs] and the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center located just west of town, [ftclarhs] about 20 miles to the west and [knifrnhs] about 10 miles of the fort. Outdoor enthusiasts have several recreational venues to take advantage of. [crossrsp] is just 5 miles south of town, [laksaksp] is about 35 miles to the northwest and [ftablissp] about 50 miles south of town. In addition, Painted Woods Golf Course is open from April Fool's Day through September 15 and invites the public to shoot a round of golf with them.
