Dickey county is located in southeastern North Dakota on the South Dakota state line. The county utilizes Ellendale. The county population on July 1, 1999, was 5,662, a decrease of 445 over the 1990 census.
The James River flows north to south in the eastern section of the county while the Maple River is located in the west and central portions.
History buffs can explore the Whitestone Hill Battlefield SHS located in western Dickey County.
