Griggs county is located in east central North Dakota and utilizes Cooperstown as its county seat. The county population on July 1, 1999, was 2,778, a decrease of 525 over the 1990 census.
Major bodies of water include the northern 30% of Lake Ashtabula (which is fed from the north by the Sheyenne River) and Red Willow Lake located in the northwestern section of the county.
