Alma is located in Harlan County (of which it is the county seat), south of Holdrege, between Orleans and Republican City, near Harlan County Lake. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 1,169, a decrease of 57 since 1990.
In February 1872, a group of six individuals selected and established the site of Alma, which was named in honor of the daughter of N. P. Cook, one of the six men who had selected the town site.
Alma is a playground for outdoor enthusiasts of all ages as nearby Harlan Reservoir's recreation area provides year-round enjoyment. Fishing, Hunting, boating and camping are popular activities for any Alma visitor.
