Newman Grove is located in Madison County northwest of Columbus, between Humphrey and Albion, off of Hwy 45. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 746, a decrease of 41 since 1990. Lewis Warren and his family came to Shell Creek Valley to settle. Warren's son, Newman, helped plant a large grove of cottonwood trees on their timber claim. After Newman's death at age 21, his father was instrumental in naming the post office, established in 1874, "Newman Grove." Located near that grove of trees, it was housed in the stage station on the mail route from Columbus to Oakdale. The area was settled in the late 1860's and incorporated in 1888. Today Newman Grove, is an agricultural based community, while offering a lifesyle that's important to rural communities parallel the early settlement days: strong church, strong education, strong family commitment, healthy environment, social atmosphere, and places to work and shop.
