Red Cloud is located in Webster County (of which it is the county seat) 28 miles south of Hastings along Hwy 281 and the Republican River; near Willa Cather State Historic Site and the Kansas State line.
Named for a famous Indian chief and home to both a Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist and a baseball Hall of Fame pitcher, the town of "Red Cloud" got its official start in 1871.
The area of Red Cloud is surrounded by prime habitat for hunters who are seeking upland game, turkey and deer.
Each July, on the second weekend, the Red Cloud Area Chamber of Commerce hosts a "Tank Float." Participants from a large area descend on the Republican just outside Red Cloud with their cattle-watering tanks.
