Bayonne is in Hudson County, in the Gateway Region, and is located at the end of a peninsula between New York Harbor and Newark Bay. Bayonne is part of the Jersey City, New Jersey metro area.
The region was settled by the Dutch, but the British gained control in 1664. During the 18th century, large estates occupied the peninsula. Industry did not arrive until powder was produced during the War of 1812.
The city is named for Bayonne, France, and the locals are Bayonneites. Major industries include oil processing and shipping. The oil refining began in 1875. Polluntants were dumped into the bay at that point and many fires sparked along the waterfront.
Bayonne was the filming location for the 2001 movie, "A Beautiful Mind" and the 2002 movie, "Swimfan."
