Belleville, the cherry blossom capital of America, is in Essex County, in the Gateway Region. It is in the suburbs of Newark, and southeast of Bloomfield and Montclair.
The community was originally established as a Dutch settlement on the Passaic River. Its name derives from French meaning "beautiful city". An interesting event that happened in Belleville in 1798 was one of the first steam engines was built by John Stevens.
In more current events, the 2001 movie, "A Beautiful Mind" and the TV series, "The Sopranos" were both filmed here. Throughout the years many well known residents have called Belleville home. Some of them are Angelina and Sarah Grimke, who were both abolitionists, Theodore Dwight Weld, who was also an abolitionist, and Tommy De Vito, a singer.
