This museum which is part of Sussex County, was named "The Fluorescent Mineral Capital of the World," in 1968 due to the fact that nowhere else in the world are there as fluorescent as minerals. The museum contains samples of minerals, rocks, fossils, and Native American relics, most of which are mined from the nearby area.
Ores and minerals are displayed under ultraviolet light in the Fluorescent Room, producing brilliant colors. An adjacent mine replica demonstrates zinc mining. Dinosaur footprints and fossils from around the world are also displayed. Visitors can prospect at a nearby site that operates during museum hours. Guided 45-minute tours are available.
Franklin Mineral Museum is located in the Skylands Region of north central New Jersey on Route 23.
