Located in Hunterdon County, Spruce Run Reservoir was one of the first water supply facilities to be constructed in New Jersey, in 1963. This 11 billion gallon on-stream reservoir has 1,290 acres of water surface and 15 miles of shoreline, and was created to meet the increasing demand for water and recreational areas.
In 1958 New Jersey enacted the Water Supply Law and the Water Bond Act, and with these legislations water was to be conserved and managed usefully, causing the reservoir to be formed. Now the Spruce Run Reservoir is a vital part of a water supply system that consists of other bodies of water that have a capability of delivering 225 million gallons of water per day to places that need them in central New Jersey.
The recreation area is 600-acres that holds a bathing beach, boat rentals, family campsites, and seasonal boat storage. There are picnic facilities and public boat launches that are maintained throughout the year. Also the area offers windboarding, rollerblading, jogging, and biking.
