Wharton State Forest is 114,793 acres of the largest single tract of land within the New Jersey State Park System spanning the three counties of, Atlantic County, Camden County, and Burlington County. It is also the site of Batsto Historic Village, a former bog iron and glassmaking industrial center from 1766 to 1867.
Throughout Wharton, there are rivers and streams for canoeing and fishing, hiking trails, including the Batona Trail, and miles of unpaved roads for mountain biking and horseback riding. There are also many lakes, ponds and fields perfect for wildlife observation and hunting.
Bald eagles, red-tailed hawks, marsh hawks, great blue herons, swans, screech owls, great-horned owls, purple martins, beavers, river otters, and fox are only some of the wildlife to view.
After a day in the park come visit Wharton State Park's Visitor Center, exhibit gallery, museum shop, interpretive center and the
Carranza Memorial. Also take part in camping, playgrounds, swimming at Atsion Lake, cross-country skiing, or enjoy a nice lunch at the picnic tables and food concessions.
