The fort was established in 1865 to protect travelers and residents in the Mesilla Valley from raids by local tribes. As a child, Gen. Douglas MacArthur lived at the fort. The spring Frontier Day celebration freatures games settlers played in the mid-19th century. A museum displays military uniforms, photographs and hardware. Rangers in period uniforms perform firearms demostrations. Daily 8:30-5:30. Demonstrations are given Sat.- Sun. 1-4, May 1-Sept.15. Closed holidays.
