In the spring of 1887,a young man, Michael Moriarty, left Iowa because of his poor health. He was destined for California, but was was persuaded to stay in New Mexico by some railroad men. In his travels, he met the son of Governor Edmond Ross, who was with a group in search of homestead land. Mr. Moriarty found his health improving, so he decided to stay. He returned to Iowa only long enough to pack up and move his family back to what would become Moriarty.

The population of Moriarty is approximately 1,399. The approximate number of families is 597.
