Springer is in Colfax County, and in the Northeast New Mexico region. To find Springer, travel south of Raton between Raton and Wagon Mound along US Highway 85 on the banks of the Canadian River near Charette Lake. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 1,427, an increase of 165 since 1990.
With a colorful history and impressive buildings that line its streets, Springer finds its beginnings in the turbulent days of the Maxwell Land Grant, when the Utes and Apaches roamed the territory, and trappers, buffalo hunters, prospectors, cattlemen, and outlaws sought their fortunes all across the land.
Springer was first known as Dorsey, but became Springer in 1879 when Frank and Charles Springer moved to northeast New Mexico from Iowa.
