The Valle Vidal unit of the Carson National Forest includes 100,000 acres of prime elk habitat managed for quality recreation. It is the year round home of about 1,700 elk, and fishing is superb. Hikers and horseback riders enjoy the spectacular mountain scenery and plentiful wildlife. The eastern portion is closed Jan.1 through March 31 to protect elk winter range. The western portion is closed May 1 through June 31 for elk calving. Trout fishing is open from July 1 through Dec. 31. Special regulations apply.
