The California Desert Protection Act of 1994 added 1.3 million acres of BLM land to Death Valley National Monument bringing the total acreage to approximately 3.3 million acres. Additions extended the monument in all directions except northwest. The monument's status was changed to Death Valley National Park and most of the land was designated Wilderness, by far the largest Wilderness in the Lower 48. The park extends into Nevada.
