Amherst is located in Erie County on the NE outskirts of Buffalo, near Niagra Falls and in the Western Region of the state. Amherst borders Greater Buffalo-Niagra International Airport, which is the focus of major air service to the Buffalo-Niagra area. In the center of town is one of two campuses belonging to the State University of New York Buffalo. Amherst is part of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls, New York metro area.
