Beacon is located in Dutchess County 10 miles north of West Point between Cold Spring and Poughkeepsie along Highway 9 on the banks of the Hudson River near Storm King State Park and is in the Southern Region of the state. Beacon is part of the Dutchess County, New York metro area.

IT was named after Mount Beacon, where colonists lit fires to warn of British troops during the Revolution.
