Defiance is located in northwestern Ohio in Defiance County (of which it is the county seat) about 50 miles southwest of Toledo on the banks of the Maumee River. In addition, the Tiffin River and the Auglaize River empty into the Maumee here. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 16,458, a decrease of 329 since 1990. Golfers can choose beteen Auglaize Country Club, a semi-private club with an open guest policy and featuring an 18-hole, 6,400-yard course; Kettenring Country Club, a private club but with a reciprocal guest policy for members of other clubs and St. Mike's Golf Course, a public 18-hole course that shoots to a par of 70.
