The Muskingum River begins its journey to the Ohio River in east central Ohio in Coshocton where the Walhonding and Tuscarawas Rivers meet in central Coshocton County.
As a major tributary of the Ohio, the river played an important part in the early development of southeastern portion of the state. It has played a major role in the rise of such towns and cities as Conesville, Dresden, Zanesville, Philo, McConnelsville, Beverly, Lowell and Marietta, where it empties into the Ohio.
