Nelsonville is located in southeastern Ohio in Athens County about 50 miles southeast of Columbus and 10 miles northwest of Athens inside the Wayne National Forest on the banks of the Hocking River. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 4,661, an increase of 98 since 1990. Burr Oak Lake anchors Burr Oak State Park about 10 miles northeast of town for those wanting to enjoy the great outdoors.
