Van Wert is located in northwestern Ohio in Van Wert County (of which it is the county seat) about 90 miles nortwest of Columbus. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 10,608, a decrease of 314 since 1990. Those looking for outdoor recreation will find it at Grand Lake St. Marys and Grand Lake St. Marys State Park about 20 miles south of town. In addition, The Woods Golf Club, a semi-private club with an open guest policy, offers an 18-hole course for golfers of all skill levels. The course is about 6,800 yards long from the Championship tees and has a par of 72.
