Fairfield county is located in central Ohio just southeast of Columbus with Lancaster serving as the county seat. The county population on July 1, 1999, was 126,723, an increase of 23,255 over the 1990 census.
Although the county shares Buckeye Lake with Perry County, Buckeye Lake State Park, the state's oldest, is wholly within the county on the lake's southern shores. Visitors from far and wide come to the lake to enjoy the many activities around the 3,300-acre lake.
Larger municipalities include Canal Winchester and Pickerington, both important suburbs of Columbus.
