Wayne county is located in northeastern Ohio about 50 miles south-southwest of Cleveland and uses Wooster as its county seat. The county population on July 1, 1999, was 111,045, an increase of 9,584 over the 1990 census.
The county was created in 1808 and named in honor of Gen. "Mad" Anthony Wayne--he of the "Indian fighter" fame.
Historically significant sites in the county include the Gen. Reasin Beall (War of 1812) House and the Gertenslager Carriage and Wagon Company in Wooster and the Ezekiel Zimmerman House near Marshallville.
Post-secondary education is available at Wooster College, a private, coeducational liberal arts and sciences institution founded in 1866.
