Checotah is located in eastern Oklahoma in McIntosh County south of Muskogee near the intersection of U.S. Highway 69 and Interstate 40 northwest of the Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge and north of Eufaula Lake.

The town is known for its colorful past and beautiful surroundings. Highlights include Honey Springs Battlefield Park, the Deep Fork Nature Center and the Katy Depot Center as well as being the home of five World Champion Steer Wrestlers. In addition, the Indian Territory Cemetary, with tombstones dating from 1872 to 1912, is located here.
