Heavener is located in eastern Oklahoma in Le Flore County on scenic U.S. Highway 59 surrounded by Lake Wister, Lake Wister State Park and the Ouachita National Forest. The Heavener Runestone State Park is just north of town and contains a 10-foot-high slab of sandstone with runic alphabet carvings believed to been made by Viking explorers circa 750-1000 A.D.

Other local attractions include the Peter Conser Historic Home, Heavener Area Historical Society Museum and Kerr Nature Center .
