Cotton county is located southwestern Oklahoma with Walters serving as the county seat.
The only major waterway in the county is the Red River which forms its southern boundary. Interstate 44 enters the southern part of the state from Texas on its way to Oklahoma City, Tulsa and points east.
As with a lot of counties in the state, Cotton ccounty has its share of ghost towns including Hulen, nine miles northeast of Walters; Taylor, five miles southwest of Temple and Goodman, three miles southwest of Hastings in the southeastern section of the county.
The county population on July 1, 1999, was 6,609, a decrease of 42 over the 1990 census.
