This is the 1890 birthplace of Dr. Norman Bethune. Norman Bethune was born in 1890 in Gravenhurst Ontario, a small lumbering town 100 miles north of Toronto. Dr. Bethune is a Canadian hero, the inventor of the mobile blood transfusion unit and a true humanitarian who saved countless lives. Dr. Bethune was a brilliant surgeon, artist, teacher and inventor. One of his inventions, the rib shears, were so well designed that they are still in use today. The house has been restored and offers exhibits on Dr. Bethune's life and accompishments.
