The Barlow Road Today

Search Visit Oregon

The last overland segment of the Oregon Trail to be completed, the Barlow Road around Mount Hood is today nearly retraced by Highways 197, 211, 26, and 224, and Forest Service Road 48. No longer encumbered with tolls and rough plank roads, contemporary travelers on the Barlow Road can stop at those same meadows where emigrants rested their livestock, and enjoy views that the emigrants were perhaps too weary to enjoy in the 1840s.
