This private, nonprofit institution is located six miles south of Bend and ten miles north of Sunriver. A living museum, its emphasis is on the natural and cultural history of the arid Northwest. Enjoy live animals and life-size dioramas of the 1800s settlement of the West, as well as an interesting display of Native American life.

The main facility is highlighted by the 28,000 square-foot Earl A Chiles Center on the Spirit of the West. Its Hall of Exploration and Settlement productions depict eight time periods in the West's development.

The museum produces a variety of program and hands-on learning opportunities. It is open every day except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years.
