South Beach is located along the southern banks of Yaquina Bay, across the Highway 101 bridge from Newport.
This area has been known as South Beach since the turn of the century, although Harborton is the official name of the plat.
The south jetty extends from South Beach, where the Yaquina River meets the Pacific Ocean. Fishing, surfing, diving and many other Outdoor Activities reside here.
South Beach Marina is always scattered with fishing charters, as well as various pleasure boats. Crabbing is available for those without a boat off of the Newport Public Fishing Pier.
A short distance east from the marina provides visitors with a multitude of family educational activities. The Oregon Coast Aquarium and the Hatfield Marine Science Center are both located this side of South Beach. A wildlife refuge and estuary is found near the OSU Hatfield Marine Science Center. Here, outdoor enthusiasts can harvest a variety of clam species. Don't forget your shellfish license, contact Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife for more information.
