Only 7,900 people live in this 4,500 square mile county in Eastern Oregon. The county was named after General Ulyyses S. Grant from the Civil War. Its boundaries touch eight other county boundaries which is the most in Oregon. The county seat is Canyon City, just a few miles south of John Day.
Highway 26 crosses the county east-west and passes through John Day. The Sheep Rock Unit of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument is just off Hwy 26 near the western edge of the county.
