During the age of steam, the PRR relied on the workers of Altoona to design, build, test, operate and repair just about everything it needed in the operation of the Standard Railroad of the World. Perhaps Altoona's greatest accomplishment was the K4s passenger steam locomotive. Designed in Altoona and first built at the Juniata Shops in 1914, and was known for its speed and reliability. Of the 425 that were built, only one operable K4s remains today.
