Not to be confused with the English word "hotel," the Hotel de Ville has housed Montreal's city administration since 1878. The interior and roof were rebuilt after a fire in 1922. From the balcony of this building, General Charles de Gaulle spoke the words, "Vive le Quebec libre!" in 1967.
