The Bannister Gallery is dedicated to Edward Mitchell Bannister, a noted 19th century African-American artist. His success in the 1900's is a testament to the great strength of willpower, intelligence, and the desire to succeed in the face of tremendous opposition.
Over the years this multivalent, modestly funded, yet persistently ongoing program has presented the work of artists such as: Dale Chihuly, Lorna Simpson, Jerome Witkin, Gordon Parks, Mahler Ryder, Arno Minkinnen, Bruce Chao, Robert Birmelin,Willy Heeks, David Macaulay, Peggy Cyphers, Guliermo Gomez-Pena & Roberto Sifuentes, Misch Kohn, Clarissa Sligh, Gabor Peterdi, Jim Goldberg, Michael Kvium, Bill Seaman, and Terry Allen; to name just a few.
