Veterans of five wars are buried in the six-acre national shrine, often called South Carolina's "Little Arlington." Most of the soldiers buried in this cemetery died while imprisoned at the Florence Stockade. However, most of those remains are buried as unknowns. Besides those that died at the stockade, many remains were brought from surrounding areas in South Carolina; including Cheraw, Darlington, Marion, Columbia, Hilton Head and Magnolia Cemetery in Charleston.
