One of the islands south of the city of Charleston, Kiawah Island is a popular vacation spot. The island was named for the Kiawah (KEE-a-wah) Indians, who inhabited the island through the 1500s. In 1988, the Town of Kiawah Island was incorporated.

Kiawah Island offers many recreation opportunities. Visitors and residents may enjoy golf on one or all of Kiawah Island Golf Resort's four award-winning courses. Guests may also enjoy tennis. The island also offers many restaurants ranging from fine dining to informal. For the nature lover there is a nature center at Night Heron Park. Visitors may take their own nature tour on the many miles of bike trails, or embark on a sea kayak journey to enjoy the birds, aquatic life, and vegetation found on Kiawah. There is also over 10 miles of pristine beach.
