North Charleston is located in Charleston County along Interstate 26 on the banks of the Cooper River near the Francis Marion National Forest. North Charleston is north of the city of Charleston and east of Charleston International Airport. Incorporated in 1972, it is South Carolina's youngest city of any size. In the past 25 years North Charleston has experienced rapid growth. The City is the State's third largest municipality in population and second in area. North Charleston is part of the Charleston-North Charleston metro area.
