Established in 1942, the Santee National Wildlife Refuge offers visitors a chance to view and explore 15,095 acres of wildlife. The refuge is located eight miles south of Summerton, South Carolina on Highway 15/301. The refuge is located on the north shore of Lake Marion in the upper coastal plains region of Clarendon County. The refuge is a major wintering area for ducks, geese and swans, and a nesting and stopover area for neo-tropical migratory birds, raptors, shore birds and wading birds. Endangered and threatened species include the red-cockaded woodpecker, bald eagle and American alligator.

The refuge aims to provide habitat for migratory waterfowl consistent with the objectives of the North American Waterfowl Management Plan. The refuge offers a visitors center, walking trails, an auto tour route, wildlife observation and photography.
