Highmore is the county seat of Hyde County, and is located on US 14 where it meets Hwy 47, approximately 44 miles east of Pierre, in the Great Lakes Region.
One theory of its naming says that the town site was the highest point on the Northwestern Railway between the Missouri River and the eastern border of Dakota Territory. A second theory states that the town is named for a surveyor who worked for the railroad.
The third theory has it from a foreign worker describing the rising slope by saying "high more high more".
