Ayrshire is a maritime county in southwest Scotland, lying along the Firth of Clyde, and including Ailsa Craig. It is bounded on the north by Renfrewshire, on the east by Lanarkshire and Dumfriesshire, on the southeast by Kirkcudbrightshire, and on the south by Wigtownshire. It covers an area of 1131 square miles.
The county has 70 miles of coastline and is drained by the Ayr, Doon, Girvan, and Stinchar rivers. Though it is hilly throughout, the county is extensively cultivated and has large dairy farms. The county is also rich in minerals.
Ayr is the county seat and Ardrossan is the chief port. Other towns are Saltcoats, Irvine, Gailes, Troon, and Prestwick. All of these are popular holiday resorts.
