Caithness is the northernmost county of Scotland on the mainland of Great Britain. It includes the Island of Stroma, which is separated from the Orkney Islands by the Pentland Firth. It is bounded on the west and south by Sutherlandshire and on the east by the North Sea. It covers an area of 688 square miles. The greater part of its surface is moorland, used for grazing sheep, cattle, and horses. The coastline is bold and rocky. In the south part are the Morven Hills, of which Morven Peak and Scaraben are the highest points in the shire, each over 2000 feet above sea level. The chief rivers are the Thurso, Forss, Wick Water, Langwell, Stratmore, and Berriedale. The three lochs of consequence are Watten, Calder, and Shurrery. The county town is Wick. Other towns are Thurso, Latheron, Reay, Dunbeath, and Berriedale. Dunnet Head is the most northerly point in Scotland.
