Lanarkshire is an inland county of south central Scotland, embracing the valley of the Clyde, bounded on the north by Stirlingshire and West Lothian, on the east by Midlothian and Peeblesshire, on the south by Dumfriesshire and on the west by Ayrshire and Renfrewshire. The area is 879 square miles.

The broad Clyde Valley rises to moorlands on the east and west. The southern part of the county is hilly, with Tinto Hill the loftiest height at 2335 feet. Lanarkshire is the most populous of Scottish counties. Lanark is the county town.

Besides prehistoric and Roman remains, Lanarkshire contains the castles of Bothwell, Douglas, and Craignethan, the priories of Blantyre and Lesmahagow, and the battlefields of Blantyre, Drumclog, and Bothwell Brig.
