Morayshire is a county in northeast Scotland, bounded on the north by the Moray Firth, on the east by Banffshire, on the south by Inverness-shire, and on the west by Nairnshire. Its area is 485 square miles.
The surface of the shire is about equally divided between hills and fertile lowlands. The northern spur of the Monadhliath Mountains extends up into the southern half of the county. The highest peak, Larig Hill, reaches almost 2000 feet. Along the coast, the shire is very fertile except for the sand dunes of Culbin. The chief rivers are the Lossie, Findhorn, and Spey. There are several lakes dotted throughout Moray and several picturesque glens.
The county seat is ELgin. There are 33 miles of coast line along the Moray Firth, with good ports at Lossiemouth, Garmouth, Burghead, and Findhorn.
The ancient Province of Moray also included Nairnshire and parts of other shires.
