Abilene State Park, southwest of Abilene, is set amidst a low range of hills called the Callahan Divide. The original park construction was done by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the early 1930's.
The park offers camping, hiking, nature study, swimming in summer, picnicking, fishing in Buffallo Wallow Pond in the park and in nearby Lake Abilene. Facilities include restrooms, showers, playground, swimming pool, and recreation facilities. The park staff operates a store where they sell ice, firewood, and other items.
