Built in 1860 by Noble Birge, prominent merchant, who came to Jefferson to establish a hardware store. Foundation of pegged and notched hand-hewn cypress sills, the floor of heart pine, with 14-ft ceilings. The original well is of angle brick and is outside the home in an enclosed porch. Tours daily. There is a charge.
