The monument was erected in 1976 to honor the Georgia Batallion that volunteered in the Texas War of Independence. Most were killed in the Goliad massacre; Dr John Shackelford, forwhom the county is named, was spared as useful to the Mexicans.

Located near the chamber of commerce at S Main and S First streets.
