The land, approximately 5800 acres, was purchased in 1993. Construction of park facilities is underway. The canyon was on the "Joe Johnson" Road from San Antonio to Bandera which was blazed by the military at Fort Sam Houston in the 1850's. The canyon is part of the rich ranching history of Texas.
