Harlingen is located just north of Brownsville on US 77 in the southernmost county of the state, Cameron County.
Known in the early days as "Six-Shooter Junction.", Harlingen is now part of the Brownsville-Harlingen-San Benito, Texas metro area.
In a sense relating to six-shooter, Harlingen Air Force Base was vital in training aircraft crews for WWII, and again in the 1950s.
Today the focus is on tourism related to the Rio Grande River and the Gulf of Mexico, but Palm Valley is the aloe vera capital of the nation.
